Benefit for The NorthShore Animal League

My cousin sent this to me, she lives in New York City, I thought this would be a good stand to take if you live in the area.

I hope that you are having a wonderful day. I have very exciting news to share

I am running in this year’s November 2009 NYC marathon(got my running numbers and all),with that said I have chosen to run for a something I believe very strongly about. I love animals and I especially believe all animals deserve a loving home/ environment.

I am asking everyone I know to help me raise money for The North Shore Animal League. My goal is to raise $2,500 and I need your help in reaching this goal to help our little furry friends. :)

North Shore Animal League America, headquartered in Port Washington, NY, is the largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization in the world. The Animal League reaches across the country to rescue, nurture and adopt nearly 20,000 pets into happy and loving homes every year. Obesity, Yesterday and Today

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

So much talk about obesity lately, I just had to throw out a few random thoughts on the subject, especially in the area of child obesity.

Thinking back to when I was a child….I have no memory of knowing anyone who was ever obese…
I cant help but wonder, at what time did this disease become so much of a problem for ones self  and then now our society?/?

I have vivid memories of mama raising us with limited snack choice….probably only because we lived on a budget…But never complained….the food was always good!

I remember mama cooking bacon and fried eggs for breakfast, fried spam for lunch and fried pork chops for dinner…..
And….
My family had no issues with fat, considering today if that was part of our daily menu, most of society would freak out, because its not considered healthy.

I also remember we never went to drive thru windows or ate any fast food places….maybe a few restaurants…My family cooked outdoors a lot and with family and friends and those are the memories I treasure the most.

I remember one time mama bought some Lucky Charms…I think I ate the whole box!
We usually only had  Granola Nuts or plain Cheerios for cereal…

For snacks I remember vanilla wafers and that’s about it.

So, looking at today and what we eat…because we all in a rush…we go to the quickest drive thru for lunch, and buy the easiest packaged meals to cook…coffee is flavored with all kinds of sugars and artificial sweeteners, what happened to plain ole sugar???

….this is just a small look at the differences in how our generations and the old generations have changed our eating habits.

Also I can mention that, being obese is a choice. Just like taking care of ourselves.
We do have a choice of what to put in our mouth.
I wish more parents could be better role models for our children…

….we might see a difference in who will run our world in the future when we are to old and sick to make a difference.

Honestly, I love organic and healthy foods and my children eat them up faster than I can put them in the pantry.

They actually love trying different kinds of cheeses and organic crackers and flavored water…believe me they still want the chips and the sodas…but they are actually ADD and ADHD as it is…which they shouldn’t have any ways, so I try to influence them to make better choices.

Maybe we should all go back to the way we used to eat?

I hope you can make better choices in choosing your groceries for you and/or your family.

Life in a Small Town

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Awe…Well when I woke up today, I saw the sun barely coming through the wooden blinds of my country bedroom….I stretched and felt a warm kiss on my cheek from my hunny and decided to make myself feel a happy sunrise hit all of us today!

For a few weeks now, I have accomplished a lot of positive thinking moments…after being convinced by a few special people that I am an encourager and should possibly look into being  a Life Coach.

So upon thinking this….I thought I better start taking my own advice…Some of my close friends know that my words that I blog about on Twitter and Facebook  often make me look like my life is a roller coaster. And actually it feels like it most of the time, but in a good way. I make it that way!

I have always been a happy person but I have found over the years its been more of a challenge to fight to be positive all the time….Its kinda hard in this crazy world we live in…especially looking at my own drama life…the city girl that left it all behind to find romance in this small little country town I’ve now planted my roots in….and totally changed my lifestyle!
Odd things is…as small as a town it is…a lot of stuff happens here! And so I wanted to reflect on something sweet I witnessed yesterday.

Let me start by saying about…over a year ago, I was put in a situation where I defended one of my daughters (like a good parent should do).
The problems came at first with just with some of her peers, then some school teachers, then the principal and then other parents…and well I just kept defending my daughter the whole time.
It was a really big mess…details aren’t important at this  time…

So….we all separated ourselves ,both the parents and the children,
(that were all close at one time)
Speaking not a word to each other, even if we saw each other in church!

Gosh…retelling this story makes me haunt…how childish we all were.

Anyways…
So, like a year has passed….all the girls now talk to each other again and actually all work at the same place and also go to different events with each other. So, they put it all in the past….but I have never talked to any of these parents I had words with back then.

Well, I went to the local meat market yesterday and as I was walking to the entrance of the store…like most nice people in this small town…a “how ya doing mam“?
Came at me…
I……like normal…was actually honest…like 98% of the time…Im not afraid to say anything!
So, I said Geez, I’m exhausted..(it had been a really challenging day for me) and the gentleman came closer, saying “and why is that?”
… And then…as he approached me..he had this look on his face
…and said “who are you”?

Well, this happens all the time because of the business my husbands runs so I assumed it was one of the customers we had once dealt with…So I said yes I’m so and so’s wife…

and he said “that’s it” now I remember!

I had no clue who he was …until he reminded me of who is daughter was!
Guess? Yep, one of the girls that had problems with my daughter
…and he was a dad that had been really ugly!

Well, it was a different story at that moment, he gave me a hug and said how much he missed his little girl (referring to my daughter) and wanted to know all about her…
So we preceded into the meat market , talking and this gentlemen was recognized by someone else…and this person said “where is all your hair?

Well…duh! that’s why I hadn’t recognized him….I just thought he had became bald.

He explained that he had a dear friend that had been going through chemotherapy for cancer and she lost all of her hair…
So….this gentlemen said I wanted to show her my love and I shaved off all my hair to support her!
Awe….
This touched me so much.

I really haven’t had many people  in my life ,have cancer…but  I have participated in fund raisers for Women’s Breast Cancer Awareness before….
It is my hope that my words in my stories get to many people…and one day when I have enough support coming from my stories on Wine Glass Girl, I would love to have a fund raiser event.
In the meantime…if you know anyone who is willing to share a story of cancer or survival. Please pass them this link and have them contact me. I would love to share their story.

Also, I want to note that as a parent I assumed that I would always feel that tug on my heart to protect your child….in which I always will…however because of the real truth that has relished over this past year….I admit that I was blind to many things at that time.
Its helped me to grow and learn from that experience…and the journey that we travel can only open more doors.

Animal Kingdom!

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Hello friends…Taking a trip down memory lane, remembering some of the previous pets I have had in my life.

Just recently I adopted a baby puppy…Oh, he is so cute! I love him so dearly already! My friends are surprised that I got another dog as well as my husband.

I kinda didn’t tell my husband that I was getting another puppy because I didn’t want anyone talking me out of it…Just felt like I needed it…and the puppy needed a home too so….

Well…Last night I felt like I was a new mommy again….he woke up twice..once to potty and another because he was so thirsty. But its ok…. loves me so much and just makes me feel so happy…like a new friend.

So….Here is my dog dilemma….We currently have 5 dogs. These dogs used to chase the cars and trucks that would pass in front of our house and bark like they were screaming at the cars as they passed…

They also have been accused of eating some of the chickens that roam around our home (the chickens belong to neighbors that do not keep chickens in a coop) and that is another story.

So…we built a fence around our home in the country, TO KEEP THE DOGS LOCKED IN.

…One dog has super natural power strength and is able to leap over the 6 foot fence.

…All the others are professionally barkers and can eat at the speed of lighting! They have bionic ears that can hear certain trucks with certain mufflers that carry certain dogs and detect noises from miles away….

…They sure let us know when they are coming down the road.

Well, a few weeks ago we added a patio cover to our back patio. Which actually became a parking lot of lawnmowers, mini-trucks and fishing boat.

Iam guilty of making many sarcastic remarks about my nice new back patio, becoming a parking lot and patio for the dogs.

Well, not even a week later, we had severe thunderstorms…After the storm was over I went to check on the animals.

Now keep in mind the dogs have so much space to stay covered in about a half of acre back yard area, but guess where I found them?

In the boat~!!! They tore  through the canvas boat cover and took cover from the rain. For their entertainment they decided to eat “MY” boat seat!

There were pieces of foam everywhere! It was such a mess.

So…within days the dogs were moved to new home. A private pasture just behind our backyard. Where they are safe and I cant hear them bark or see them tear anything up.

I had just begun to forgive them when another drama happened. But that’s another story.

So…

…I bet if you think of the animals you had in your life you would agree that most of the  animals you’ve had gave you happiness and happy stories. My animals give me both! And yes drink alot of wine!
