In Faith

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4: 6-7

This often quoted scripture finally made sense to me very recently, and, I learned, it has everything to do with faith.

Faith is what I have struggled with for many years of my walk. In my lack of faith, I remained in a continuous state of anxiety, allowing fear to prevail over my life.

After listening to a teacher one morning speak on faith, I pondered this scripture he used during his sermon. In thinking about it well into the afternoon, I asked myself if it is possible to live my life anxious for nothing (not worrying about the future), and, could I truly have peace? A dear friend whom I had not spoken to for several months called me that same day. In posing these questions to her, she asked if she could read some pages from a book that she was just given, A Christian’s Secret of a Happy Life by Hannah Whitall Smith. As she read, I heard faith in almost every sentence, and with such great detail. The scripture I questioned all morning long came up as she was reading – a surprise to us both and an affirmation of God’s love and faithfulness. As my friend continued to read I began to feel less burdened. Tears began to flow.

Of course I set out the following day with great determination to find this book. In talking with another friend about the book, she exclaimed that she was currently reading it. I never heard of this classic written by a woman of faith many years ago, and now 2 dear friends were immersed in it. Less than a week later I was given the gift of my own copy. What a joyful day, as I knew it would be an asset to my every waking day. I do not mean for any book to replace the Word of God. Reading God’s word makes a huge difference in your life, but I also believe that a well-written book is a great accompaniment and sometimes an appendage to the bible. This particular author has a gift of bringing scripture to life by expounding on how to obey, to walk, to have faith, to trust, to lean on and serve God with all your heart. My desire is to help get this book into your hands, and, that you continue to pass it on to others. Imagine how life would be if we had peace from God as we trusted Him each day – each day!

These last 4 years have been the most challenging for me, but, I can now say I have begun to “walk by faith”. I believe it was God’s timing for me to trust Him once and for all. By placing fiery trials in my pathway, I learned to seek Him and know Him. Now my eyes have been opened a little wider and a new journey begins…

The following is a taste from chapter 5 titled, “Difficulties Concerning Consecration” (don’t let the title scare you…). She is speaking about Consecration. The definition of Consecration is to set apart or declare holy. Sanctification. We are taught from God’s word that He is sanctified and we are to be sanctified by His truth. She states that we strive to do this and we do what we think is necessary but yet we find nothing different in our experience.

“ The chief temptation that assaults the soul at this point and at every step of its progress concerns feelings. We can’t believe we are consecrated until we feel that we are. And because we don’t feel that God has taken charge of us, we can’t really believe that He has. As usual, we put feelings first, faith second, and His promise last of all. Now, God’s rule in everything is, His promise (His word) first, faith second, and feelings last of all. We cannot change this order.”

I realized after reading this that I had not lived in that order, but I was ready to. I also realized that putting my feelings first was like putting myself first, which took the focus off of God and put all focus on me. It seems that when thoughts and focus are turned to one’s self, the door is open for fear, making it most difficult to walk by faith! Hannah goes on to say how to put faith before feeling. “Give yourself completely to the Lord. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you all that is not of Him in your heart and life. If anything is revealed to you, give it to the Lord immediately and say, “Thy will be done”. If the Holy Spirit reveals nothing then you must believe there is nothing, and must conclude you have given Him all. Then recognize the fact that when you give yourself to God He accepts you. Let your faith take hold of that fact at once. Firmly believe that He has taken all that you have surrendered to Him. You must not wait to feel that you have given yourself, or that God has taken you. You must simply believe it to be the case. If you are steadfast in believing, you will realize that you are completely the Lord’s.

These revelations were moments of bliss for me. You can have these moments too … moments of bliss. They are yours always as you walk side by side with your Heavenly Father.

I leave you with this last encouraging scripture to ponder or study. I got lost in His word a few days ago, in a good way, while studying on the race for faith. I was going to share it in an upcoming letter but was so excited and could not wait. The following is from Hebrews 12. “Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God”.

Inspirational

Will it take a thousands voices

Often we find ourselves scattered and unclear what to do with ourselves. We get anxious and stressed out over family, jobs, friends, money or a zillion other things that life has you dealing with today.

Finding it hard to focus on what God wants you to do and not what you want to do, is a challenge, most of us believers of Jesus Christ don’t think enough about.
We are so caught up in the routine of our day, the distractions in life that prevent us from really listening to what our God wants us to do. We have no problem waiting in line in the grocery store or your favorite restaurant, yet we don’t find the time to just sit, relax or meditate on something positive, something that possibly God is trying to tell you.

Our Father gives us 24/7 365 days a year and what do we do to honor that…we get all stressed out and have no idea how to fix things.

I have mentioned before that we must look for the signs that God is really trying to tell us.

Sometime ago, I read, that if you can hear the birds singing and chirping about and hear the wind blowing and the rustle of the leaves moving,
then that is the earth praising the Lord, because you are to busy.

So when we notice the sound of the earth….Let it be a reminder that we need to sing our praises to the Lord. Be thankful for the blessings in our life. Count our blessings not our mistakes or our disappointments.

When I am caught in a whirlwind of emotional distractions, I force myself to plug into some good inspirational music.

King David in the Old Testament was known in the bible for singing at the top of his lungs, dancing naked in the streets praising the Lord.
So, although we can not have that behavior in today’s world, I am confident that we can all find someway to give praises to our King.

The upbeat positive music I listen to, almost immediately lifts me up and a smile appears upon my face and I am at peace.

Today’s technology allows us to plug in to music anywhere we go. Here are a few suggestions I can give you to listen to music that is good for your soul.

On the radio and on the internet you can log on to Klove.com for encouraging words and music. There is also a prayer wall and prayer request page. You can also call them directly and ask to speak to a pastor who will pray with you.

I have recently found Pandora which is available as an application on iPhone and is also available online to listen.

You simply choose the type of  music or type in the artist name and the music will begin to play.

Some of my favorite music is by Barlow Girl, Super Chick, Point of Grace, Third Day, and Nicole Nordeman.

Pandora will also play other music like that of which you choose, so you can learn new artist.

You can also update your Pandora Internet and watch the videos.
Other than Upbeat Christian music, I also listen to my favorite guys who calm my soul as well. They are my 3 J’s and include John C Mayer, Jack Jackson and Jason Mraz.
Music can change our moods greatly. I hope that you can find this helpful and find the music that will speak to you and rest your soul, so you can step in the directions where you are next headed.
If you are not a believer in Christ, you have to start somewhere, so, why not start here and now.
Much love, peace and happiness!

Regarding My Grandma, My role Model

My Mama Says….

Well…..it didnt take long before my mother, daughter of my grandma sent this to me regarding the facts…Looks like I need to research my family history a little more.

Wow, well since this is my mama the story is about, I am not only overwhelmed,
but choked up in reading this beautiful memoir. Yes, she was a role model to
look up to. And all of Ethel’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and
nephews, besides her four children can verify this. I have only one correction
to make, and it is an interesting one. My mama was born and raised in a little
island off the coast of Louisiana, called Burrwood. Her family lived off of the
land, and rowed a boat to pick up groceries and supplies. She was educated in a
one room classroom all the way to the 12th grade. She was a Dancing Queen at 18
in a contest. She played baseball just like all the boys on the island, and
learned at an early age to appreciate reading. She could read a book a day. When
Ethel turned 19, her family moved to New Orleans and this is where she met
David, her  husband, who swept her off her feet. Thank you Kelley, I just had to add this part of her life into your story. You have been blessed to remember Grandma Miller.

Role Models…My Grandma

Monday, September 21st, 2009

When I was little girl….
My grandma used to call me…pretty girl
…for as long as I can remember…and it  made me feel so special.

For many summers I would go to visit my grandma in Marrero, La.
She was a baby sitter for many children and so for many summers….I was blessed with meeting so many new friends…

Each time I visited grandma, I would look forward to what kind of New Orleans Creole dish she would be cooking and which children she had coming over.

…As many years passed and I grew older I was always intrigued to see what kind of casserole grandma was cooking…..
The casserole continued to get more and more interesting….

Grandma is the only person I have ever known that can make “Stuffed Merliton”, yet alone the only person I know that cooks them!

My first memory of grandma serving them…Was kinda toward the way of  what the heck is that?
I had no idea what a merliton was…but I tell you what…once you tasted one you were in love with it…

Grandma’s version was stuffed with a shrimp or crabmeat dressing. Yum…

Actually, a mirliton is not in the dictionary…but it is also called a chayote. A mirliton is grown in Louisiana is also the same as chayote (everywhere else)

It’s a gourd that needs to be cooked… when cooked it’s sort of like cucumber but slightly more tender…. And great for stuffing it with rice dressing.
It is grown on a vine.
Here is a link to Emeril Lagasse’s recipe for Stuffed Mirliton.

Grandma was born in the year of 1919, when life was just so much more simple. When the woman of the home made the clothing. When cars and planes were just coming about in life.
She  grew up her whole life in New Orleans.
My grandma loved to take pictures…I can just see her taking out her disposable camera snapping away. I cant help but think…that back in the early 1900’s when the first portable camera came out if she found a way to get one!
Grandma never drove a car in her life and I wonder if her family even had one, considering cars were such a luxury items…back in the day.
I should know this family history but I don’t. (Guilty)
Although she didn’t drive, that sure did not keep her home, she traveled all over the United States in her life time.
She had such patience and strength and was a huge role model for me, my children and so many others in her life.

I remember visiting grandma and taking the ferry across the Mississippi river, and looking over the sides of the ferry guard rails and she would say don’t fall in, it will suck you up!
Grandma also took us on the trolley car to Canal Street  and having a fountain drink or Coke Float on a bar stool at Walgreens.

I remember it was her to have me experience what a city bus was…and I remember thinking how cool it was to stick coins in the ching ching thing when you got on the bus.

Phonographs were still available as a common entertainment device, so during my summer visits, me and my friends would play the old records she had on the phonograph she had in the garage.
The record I remember the most was “Knock three Times” I have no idea who sang it but I can still remember some of the words.

Grandma loved her garden and all her flower pots…She had the greenest thumb I have ever seen in someone. Her African Violets were always so bright and blooming.

Over 20 years ago, Grandma went to visit one of her brother in California…(he was a tug boat captain/Uncle Buddy) When she returned she brought back a plant wrapped in a wet paper towel….
As I became a young woman and wanted my own plants she began to share the plant in the wet paper towels with me.

One of the plants she gave me was a shamrock plant…that plant has gone through so many hurricanes, storms, cold spells, dogs digging it up, dogs sleeping in the pot, the list can go on and on..
I still have it today…And…It is still beautiful and living in pots on my front patio!

Grandma had this magic about her…

Sports…Oh my gosh, this woman my grandma…was the biggest Saints fan ever…she also was a huge fan of Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards, and I think her heart was broken when he convicted.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Edwards

Random thought I was in Wal-Mart yesterday when I passed a very long line…and freaked out that was the line to check out in…
However it was the line to the pharmacy….I over heard two men chatting about the line and the senior citizen said…looks like the line at the Food Stamp Office.
My friend commented that the older we get the bolder the statement we make, because we don’t care…
It reminded me of my own grandma…never in my life do I remember her losing her temper, blurting out anything crazy…
Odd…because…unlike my grandma…I always say crazy things…always talking what on my tongue…but what’s on my heart the most…

That’s why when mama told me Saturday, the 19th 2009 was her 2 year anniversary of going away…
I wanted to share a few memories about her…I know in todays world there are many kinds of grandmas out there.
Many are raising our children these days.
Many are too busy in their own life or just don’t have the patience, like they used to.

I was blessed to grow up with 2 sets of grandparents still alive…Grandma Miller from New Orleans was the last one to go…
Her final years with us were incredible! My grandma and my Aunt Carol were rescued from a 3 story building in St. Bernard Manor in Chalmette, La after 3 days of Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans.

Grandma and my Aunt Carol, climbed out of a window and into a boat off of the 3rd floor of her building.

She spent the night on the lawn of the Chalmette Prison, by the Mississippi River.
She rode in a Helicopter for the first time, to the New Orleans Airport…We lost her for a few more days…
Finally…a few days later we found grandma and Aunt Carol who were  picked up in Houston, where some friends of mine from long ago had stepped in to help find them at one of the many shelters.

Woman of strength, and love, never complained even as her last few moments on earth were painful.

I hope this helps you appreciate the women in your life. We all need to be a role model for our daughters or someone else’s daughter.
If your looking for answers in your life, I recommend you go to the eldest woman in your family, I bet she has the answer for you.

Many Blessings xoxo

Eyes Wide Open or Shut?

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Oh, What a beautiful day! I don’t even know how to start this out any other way but saying life is a beautiful place. I get so excited about life sometimes that I can’t organize my thoughts fast enough….

Does that happen to you?

Let me start by saying that I’m a spiritual person, most of the time. So, occasionally I will reflect on life this way and I just wanted to let you know.

Well, early this morning, I found the time to write some specific prayers down in my prayer journal. I have learned that if I do that, I can go back years from now and see how much has changed from those specific prayers and how God has blessed me.

So, Before leaving my primping station for the morning, I felt compelled to pick up the earphone piece that goes with my telephone that has been just sitting there.

…Then I remembered my precious cousin had told me about an application on IPhone that was a great music station to listen to any type of music. So, knowing how loud the shop was going to be today….I set off with my IPhone and earpiece in hand and headed to my desk.

First I was listening to some REO Speedwagon, which I love my 1980’s music and then I decided to search for the music group, Point Of Grace. They are a Christian Contemporary Group of women that sing beautiful uplifting music.

And….ahh…it was like magic, the music just touched the right button and the most inspirational music starting talking to my soul.

So, this reminded me how much music can change your mood and vision for things.

I believe God talks to us in so many ways through the day, we just need to open our eyes to see what he is telling us.

….Whether it is a zillion red lights we hit when we are in a rush to go somewhere and then a few minutes later you find that the cars ahead of you were in a bad accident……

….. or the electricity goes out during a storm and you get to spend time in candle light sharing stories with your family, listening to the am battery operated radio

Do you belive everything has a reason?

In my world……Everything has a reason….

………..As I reflect on what I wrote in my journal prayer book, I realize that I needed refreshment. Lucky for me, I had my eyes open and was redy to doing something out of my normal routine…like listening to the uplifting music on my Ipod on my IPhone, when Im trying to work.

So….today as you go into your day….keep your eyes open…..read the signs that pass you by…flip the station on the radio….take a different route to your destination today….take fun in the adventure of being aware of your senses….You might be surprised!
